Irwin Crosthwaith

1914 – 1981

BIO

Crosthwait was an extraordinarily versatile artist. His name and style was synonymous with the world of haute couture in post war Paris as a fashion illustrator working with Vogue, Femina and L’Officiel and his abstract oils were exhibited worldwide alongside the greatest names of European Abstraction of the mid 20th Century. In his earlier years, he was an official war artist for the Royal Canadian Navy. As a member of the Tachisme movement of the mid 1950s, his textural layering of paint and subtle, sparing use of colour, often closely related in tone, made Crosthwait a natural member of this revered movement of artists that included Hans Harting, Serge Poliakoff & Nicholas de Stael.
